Goldeneye Ducks, Yellowstone Lake. May 2005.Following up on the photo of a frozen Yellowstone Lake, here's what it looks like from the ground. I was taking photos of this pair of ducks when they hopped out of the water and first one, then the other, took flight. I was lucky to catch this one in the act of lifting off. As you can see, the sliver of open water was closing as the ice pushed up against the shore, so they had to vacate immediately or get their little legs squished.
Although I heard the sudden increase of crackling in the ice all along the shore, I was staring through the viewfinder and concentrating on the birds, so I didn't see what had spooked them until I downloaded the photos later.
