University of Michigan, January 2006Taken from the third floor of West Hall on the UM campus. I never learned to do black and white photography with film, but I always admired it. Now Photoshop has made it cheap and easy, so any nerd with no technical skills can pretend he's Ansel Adams.

Yes, but the nerd still needs a good eye. What I like about this photo is the way the tree and the lamp post line up to lead your eye to the person, and these vertical figures diminish in size as one's eye moves across them, enhancing the sense that the person is not just alone, but frail.
