Friday photo

Grand Teton, October 2004

The highest peak in the Teton range, at 13, 755 feet above sea level. Not the cleverest photograph of a mountain, but I always liked the strip of cloud and the shadow it cast on the peak.

Breath-taking. That strip of cloud gives a sense of immense scale to the mountain which would otherwise be lost. Our eyes misinterpret very large, distant objects as being closer and smaller than they really are. The cloud's shadow defies that illusion.
